In 2022, Akshaya Trithiya (Punyakal) falls on 3rd May – Tuesday

This year we will pray strictly maintaining social distancing norms and by staying at home.

As per Hindu astrology andr almanac, each second on the Akshaya Trithiya day is auspicious. It is said that there is no need to look for a ‘muhurat’ on the day. The word Akshaya means ‘that which never diminishes’ and the day is ideal for beginning new spiritual sadhanas (practices) and ventures as it is believed that all energies invested on this day appreciate.

Akshaya Trithiya, or Akha Teej, is a highly auspicious day which falls on the third day after Amavasi (new moon day) in the Hindu month of Vaishakha. In 2022, the date of Akshaya Trithiya is May 3, Tuesday. Technically May 3, 5.16 am onwards Akshaya trithiya thithi starts and ends by May 4, Wednesday 7.13 am. Akshaya Tritiya Puja Muhurat starts on May 3, at 05:38 AM and ends at 12:40 PM.

It is believed that the sun and the moon are most radiant and best placed on the day – Sun Exalted in Aries (Mesha) and Moon Exalted in Taurus (Vrishabha) causing powerful yoga. Therefore it is one of the most popular dates in Hindu calendar for marriage related activities, for beginning new ventures, for investing and for purchasing valuables like gold and diamond mainly for gifting them to brahmins, elders, acharyas, siblings, gurus and women.

All are advised to perform:
Lakshmi Sahsranama archana –pooja
Sri Vishnu Saksranama archana – pooja, Kanakadhara Stotra recitation and If possible to perform also Sumangali pooja, Kanya pooja, Go pooja, Gaja and Aswa Pooja.

Performing Tarpana also recommended to attract bountiful Grace of manes or Pitrs.

According to the scriptures, the celestial specialty of Akshaya Tritiya makes it a particularly good day for four kinds of activities. They are Yajanam (performance of auspicious activities like yagnas and homams), Yaajanam (enabling the performance of auspicious activities by others), Dhaanam (charity) and Pratigraham (acquisition and accumulation of wealth of any sort)

Any of these four acts performed on Akshaya Tritiya will have sahasragunabalam, or 1,000 times the normal effect.

On Akshaya Triteya day,

If you do charity, you will conquer the pain of death.

If you help the poor and down-trodden, you will be blessed in your next birth.

If you give clothes to poor people, you will get over diseases.

If you give fruits, you will get higher position in life.

If you give butter milk, buttermilk, etc, you will progress in studies.

If you give grains, you will not die untimely.

If you perform ” Deva tharpaNam”, you will get rid of poverty.

If you give curd rice, you will get over your negative deeds and you will progress in life

Starting a new activity or buying valuables on this day for auspicious reasons or charity is considered to bring luck and success. The religious merit that is acquired by giving gifts on this day is considered inexhaustible.

Parashuram Jayanti is also observed on Akshaya Tritiya day.

There are numerous legends associated with Akshaya Tritiya; most popular is that of Sudama or Kuchela visiting Lord Krishna in Dwarka with a handful of beaten rice (poha or aval).

Another legend suggests that the Pandavas received the Akshaya Pathram (bowl) from Lord Krishna (in the Mahabharata) on this day.

It is also believed that Sage Vyasa began the composition of Mahabharata on the day.

The word “Akshaya” means imperishable or eternal – that which never diminishes. Initiations made or valuables gifted on this day are considered to bring success or good fortune. Buying gold for gifting is a popular activity on Akshaya Tritiya, as it is the ultimate symbol of wealth and prosperity. Gold and gold jewelry bought and worn on this day signify never diminishing good fortune. Indians celebrate auspiciousness , begin new business ventures, and even plan long journeys on this day.

Lord Vishnu and his incarnations are worshipped on the day. People also conduct Lakshmi puja on Akshaya Tritiya.

But nowadays, Akshaya Trithiya is associated with gold purchase and many people wait for the day to make investments in gold but scriptures recommend these actions only for gaining punya through charity by gifting these things to appropriate beneficiaries

Important Timings:

On Tuesday, May 3, 2022, Akshaya Tritiya tithi auspicious timing begins at 5.38 AM and ends at 12.40 pm, and the puja can be performed between 5.38 am to 12.40 pm on May 3. The auspicious time to perform rituals or to buy / donate gold begins at 5.38 am and ends at 9.30 pm.
