Lunar and Solar eclipses of June 2020

Hari Om

Sri Gurubyoh Namah!

Sri Matre Namah!

According to our scriptures and beliefs, eclipse or Grahan is caused when the shadow planets, Rahu (Dragon’s head) and Ketu (Dragon’s tail), swallow the Sun (Surya) and the Moon (Chandra). Vedic Astrology proclaims that eclipses are not an auspicious or good time to start or end projects, relationships, jobs, career, business or any other important thing. Auspicious beginnings need light. However, as Rahu and Ketu swallow up the luminaries (Sun and Moon) and twist it in dark ways, what you start could develop very strangely, and you may also regret ending something. During the times of eclipse, it is better to keep a low profile. Meditation / Spiritual activities are recommended as this time is favorable for connecting with the higher dimensions of consciousness. It is not advisable to start anything important on the day of an eclipse or the few days surrounding it. Importantly, if the eclipse is visible at the place where one happens to be, its impact will be greater. Solar eclipses are stronger and considered more important because, during this time, there will be a new/dark Moon or Amavasai. Thus the Moon’s vital energy will not be available in the environment.

Lunar Eclipse-June 5/6, 2020

Penumbral Lunar Eclipse June 5/6, 2020.

The eclipse will start at 11: 15 PM IST on June 5 and will go on till 2:34 AM on June 6. Eclipse at its full stage will be visible at 12:54 AM IST on June 6. The total duration of the eclipse is three hours and 18 minutes.

A lunar eclipse is when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon casting a shadow over the Moon. There are three types of lunar eclipses: total lunar eclipse, partial lunar eclipse and penumbral lunar eclipse. During a penumbral lunar eclipse, the Moon moves through the outer part of the Earth’s shadow, thus becoming very faint.

The Penumbral Lunar Eclipse to be observed in June will visible from Asia, Australia, Europe, and Africa. The peak visibility of the eclipse will be at 12:54 AM on 6 June.

People should try to have dinner preferably on 5th June before 6 pm or latest by 8 pm. Affected constellations – Anuradha, Jyeshta, Revathi, Aslesha, Moola. They (in the areas of visibility) should chant on 6th morning after bath, Sri Lalitha Sahasranama or Durgâ Chalisa. Also give Dhan of 1 kg rice with Dhakshina to a priest.

Solar Eclipse – June 21, 2020

The solar eclipse is scheduled to be on June 21.

The solar eclipse will start at 9:15 am as per Indian Standard Timing (IST) and be visible until 3:04 pm. The full eclipse will start from 10:17 am to 2:02 pm where 12:10 pm will see the maximum eclipse in India.

A solar eclipse occurs during the New Moon when the Moon moves between Earth and the Sun to cast a shadow on the Earth, thus blocking the rays of the Sun.

The Solar eclipse will be visible from parts of Africa including Central Africa, Congo, and Ethiopia. In addition it will be observed in most of North India along with South of Pakistan and China.

The period from now until Sept 23, in general for all businesses globally due to DT being in own constellation — not good and can be very detrimental if we do not take corrective actions in business. Period Nov ‘20 to Nov ‘21 (when Jupiter is debilitated) is a testing period for businesses and economy. Risk taking to be minimized and austerity measures should be in place.

Affected constellations – Mrigashirsha, Chithra, Dhanishta, Rohini and Ardra. Some scriptures say people born in Rahu’ stars – Swati, and Sathayam; Sūryā’ stars -, Uttitraphalguni, Utharashada and Krithika also need to perform the remedies. These people (who are in the areas of visibility) should give 1 kg Wheat Dhanam to a priest with Dhakshina after head bath (after 3 pm). To perform Archana for Ganeshji, Surya Bhagawan and Rahu Bhagawan (and Kethu Bhagawan) at Temple.

People should try to have Breakfast on June 21 before 6 am and latest by 7.30 am and lunch after 3 pm. During Surya Grahan any spiritual activity such as Japa, puja or meditation performed will have 1000 times positive effect. Therefore it is advised to chant Aditya Hridayam, Gayathri Mantra, Sri Vishnu Sahasrsnama or Koloru Padigam (Tamil) or Rudram/Chamakam or any other mantras of Ishta Devata (Favorite Deity).

As there are two eclipses in the month of June 2020, Lunar on June 5/6, and Solar on June 21, there can be more issues globally affecting the economy, businesses and bilateral issues of nations. More impact due to probable natural calamities and severe pandemic effects are seen. People should try to avoid unnecessary travels or risks. No new ventures to be tried without proper analysis and understanding.

As per Vedic Astrology, Between Eclipse period (June 5 to June 21) and up to 1 week before and after the eclipse — hard or bad time and no auspicious activities can be carried out during these times as per scriptures. During this period one should not undertake any auspicious or growth oriented activities. It is strongly believed that it brings bad luck to all the ventures started during the Grahan. As per vedic scriptures, due to the Solar and Lunar eclipse, many changes may occur in nature, sometimes leading to devastating events such as earthquakes or other natural calamities. Certain planetary adverse configurations coupled with Solar eclipse do not rule out violent accidents, famine, attacks or war initiated between nations or groups within 3 moon cycles. People should refrain from talking with anger and aggression for avoiding major fights or tensions. Let us pray GF and Sri Ambal for safety, protection and peace of Humanity.

In Brihat Samhita, Sage Varahamihira says:

“Somagrahe Nivrutthe Pakshanthe Yadi Bhaveth Grahorkasyal Tatra nayaha Pragnanam Dampathyor Vyram anyonyam”

Should a Solar Eclipse occur at the end of the fortnight after a lunar eclipse, people would become unruly and unjust in their behaviour and couples would be at their logger-heads.

If there should be both lunar and solar eclipses in one month, princes will suffer both from dissensions among their own army and from wars.

As per Brihat Samhita If sun or moon should be eclipsed when in the sign of Gemini (Mithuna), chaste women, princes, powerful petty chiefs, learned men, people living on the banks of the Yamunā and the rulers of Bahlikā and Matsya with their subjects will suffer miseries. If Mercury should see the eclipsed disc, honey and oil will become scarce; princes will suffer. If Mars should see the eclipsed disc, there will be war in the land and fear from fire and robbers. If Mercury should be so eclipsed, men living between the Ganges and the Yamunā, on the banks of the Sarayū and in the country of Nepāla, those living about the east sea and on the banks of the Śoṇa will suffer and women, princes, soldier boys and men of letters will perish. If the eclipses should fall in the lunar month of Jyeṣṭha, the Brāhmins, the Queens of the reigning sovereign, crops, rain, large gatherings of men, beautiful persons, the Sālvas and the Niṣādas will suffer.

During Solar Eclipse Sutak is observed for 4 Prahars and during Lunar Eclipse Sutak is observed for 3 Prahars before Eclipse. There are total 8 Prahars from Sunrise to Sunrise. Hence Sutak is observed for 12 hours before Solar Eclipse and for 9 hours before Lunar Eclipse.

Eating During Grahan

All type of food items either solid or liquid are prohibited during Sutak and Eclipse. Hence one should not eat during twelve hours before Solar Eclipse and during nine hours (at-least 3 hrs) before Lunar Eclipse till Eclipse is over. However for children, sick and old people food limitation is restricted to only single Prahar or 3 hours.

Sutak is to be observed only when Eclipse is visible at the place under discussion.

Precaution for Pregnant women

Pregnant women are strictly advised not to go out of their homes during Eclipse. It is believed that due to afflictions and malefic effects of Rahu and Ketu, the baby might become handicapped or disabled and probability of miscarriage is increased. Pregnant women are also advised not to cut or stitch any cloth or to do any other similar activities as these activities have similar effects on the baby.

Rituals After Grahan

It is advised to discard any cooked food and only freshly cooked food should be consumed after Eclipse. The food items like wheat, rice, other cereals and pickles which cannot be discarded should be protected by adding Kusha grass or Dharba grass or Tulasi leaves. Once eclipse is over one should take bath and should make offerings or charity to Vedic Brahmins. Making offerings after Eclipse is considered highly beneficial.
