Naga (Naag or Sarpa) Dosha – Nature, Cause, Effects and Remedy

Hari Om

Naag dosha also known as Sarpa dosha is a powerful limitation in any chart or horoscope causing obstacles in many ways. The Dosha happens due to rage and extreme anger by the God of Serpent. The Dosha is primarily caused by certain past bad actions or Nishidda Karma.

Rahu represents Maya (Illusion) and is said to be the head and Ketu as tail of the Sarpa. Rahu shows his unlimited want, hunger and chaos while Ketu represents moksha (or liberation) and shows how to overcome things. Rahu gets disturbed when one exploits the environment or nature. Serpents are very powerful energy and the protectors of the natural spirits.

Sarpa Dosha and Kala Sarpa Dosha:

Naga Dosha differs from Kalasarpa Dosha. Even after death, this Sarpa Dosha operates on a person. It may cause resulting in Improper or no cremation, accident death, murder, suicide, intoxication, tearing of the body by accidents / bombs, cremating without complete parts (main parts not found), cremations by strangers very late, but not by blood relatives, etc.

Whilst Kalasarpa dosha is largely hereditary and its effects can only be seen during Vimsottari dasas of Rahu, Ketu and other related planets, it has no specific time limit for Sarpa Dosha. Kalasarpa dosha has easier solutions, but Sarpa Dosha must be tested and anslysed carefully in the horoscope by a competent Vedic astrologer.

Cause of Naag Dosha

Due to late cremation or cremation by strangers.

When not all body parts get cremated together.

When a person expired in an accident, bomb blast or stampede, suicide, murder or poisoning.

If ancestors or forefathers killed an unborn child.

Black magic performed by forefathers.

When people involve themselves in cheating, stealing, destroying or harming nature and ill treating parents.

When people grab others’ properties.

All these effects can be carefully and reliably deduced and interpreted from a Vedic horoscope or by Divine guidance through Prasna by a competent Guru from the positioning of malefics (Sun, Saturn and Mars) and nodes ( Rahu & Kethu) and afflictions to benefics and beneficial houses in the Rasi and divisional charts of an individual. Severe afflictions to Kendras and Trikonas (quadrants and trines) in a chart without adequate benefic influence indicate powerful Sarpa Doshas.

Metaphysics of Sarpa worship:

Adisesha (The one who remains as the remainder even after Pralaya or complete destruction of the Universe) represents the Nature or Prakriti on whom rests Narayana the manifest God to sustain the universe. By showing reverence and devotion to the Sarpa idol and pouring milk or other offerings as part of a ritual, we are seeking forgiveness for all knowingly and unknowingly committed sins and crime towards Mother Nature and all living beings. This can also be considered as showing reverence to the moola or primordial Sakthi or Adi Sakthi being represented as serpent power within the Self to manifest itself as incarnations through cycles of birth and death based on karmic mechanism.
